There’s a First Time for Everything

Nov 04

PhotobucketUnfortunately this is my first time EVER voting. Pretty sad to say considering I’m 33 years old now. It was sort of a bittersweet moment for me today. It was sweet that I was finally doing what I should have been doing every opportunity there was to vote since I turned 18. It was sad that this was the first time I was partaking in such a major event.

I stood inline listening to political talk. Which I have to admit that I’m really sick of hearing. I’ve sort of been scarce on Twitter because I can’t stand all the political talk that’s been going on. I guess maybe I’m sick of hearing it because politics has never been my thing. I’ve never followed anything political and up until this year I was confused as to what a Republican and Democrat even meant. That’s so sad now that I stop and think about it.

And since when do kids get the day off of school because it’s election day? Yes granted voting took place in Caleb’s elementary school gymnaisum but they needed the kids to have the entire day off just so voters could use the gym? Seems sort of silly to me. It was kind of hard sitting down and voting with all the noisy kids around and babies crying (all the parents had their kids with them obviously). Not that it takes a lot of concentration to fill in circles on the voters ballot but for some reason it just got under my skin.

And as I sat to vote Caleb asked me if he could explain to me what Republican and Democrat meant. I had to giggle under my breath because here was my 10 year old son starting to explain to me something that I was fairly clueless about up until this year. Sure I learned it in highschool but I didn’t pay attention in Government class (probably why I barely scraped by and managed to pass the class with a D+ or maybe it was a D…LOL).

I felt sort of silly voting for some of the people running at the local level for positions because I had NO clue who they were. That was sort of rough. But what really got to me was Proposal A and Proposal B. There’s pros and cons to both of those proposals and I’m pretty sure I sat there for about 10 minutes wavering in my decision on both those proposals. And finally I filled in the ovals by my answer and picked my ballot up and walked to finish the whole voting process.

And for this non political gal I’m now eagerly awaiting the results of who will become our next President!

  6. Tishia,
You’re definitely not alone. I have been voting for a long time (missed a few times) but I’m right there with you, never have been into the political stuff and don’t really understand it all either. The stuff on Twitter is driving me batty so I haven’t been on as much. Looking forward to seeing the outcome tonight though.

  7. Congrats to you Tish!! I think it is awesome that you and so many other exercised your right and cast your vote for the very first time!

While I’m not happy with the outcome of the Presidential election (i’ll leave that reason to my own blog) but I’m so happy and excited to see SO MANY people getting out there and voting. (whether they have been doing it since they were 18 or for the first time! )

I was glad the kids were out of school honestly… We made it a family affair. They asked about voting, why Dan and I were voting for McCain, and why should we vote. I’m happy that I got to experience that with my children. : )

  10. My 12 year old asked me to explain the difference between Republican and Democrat. I tried to do so in a way that told the good and bad of both parties. I grew up Republican then switched to Democrat in my 20s, so I’ve been on both sides!
